Bike lights are marketed on a pair of numbers that look like a specification and function as an advertisement. Maximum lumens and maximum runtime are both real, and they describe opposite ends of the same product. The figure that decides whether you get home in the dark sits between them and is often left out.

What actually matters
- Runtime at maximum output - how long the light holds its headline brightness. It is the figure that determines whether the light covers your dark section, and it is frequently absent from the page.
- Maximum output - peak lumens. Useful above about 600 lumens only on unlit roads, and largely wasted in town where it mostly dazzles people.
- Mode table - the published pairing of each output level with its runtime. Its presence lets you plan, and its absence tells you the maker would rather you did not.
- Ingress protection - the IP rating, in two digits for dust and water. Most bike lights publish only the water digit, which quietly omits how they cope with dust.
- Weight - what hangs off the handlebar, typically 170 to 230 grams in this class. It is felt more than the figure suggests because it sits far from the steering axis.
- Beam pattern - whether the light has a shaped beam, a stated throw or a cutoff. A round beam wastes output upward and blinds oncoming riders.
- Battery capacity - in mAh, which sets the ceiling on runtime. Two lights with the same cell and different outputs will differ predictably in how long they last.

How to read a listing without getting fooled
Ignore both numbers on the front of the box and go looking for the mode table. If it exists, find the row with the highest output and read its runtime, because that is the light you think you are buying. If there is no table, check whether any runtime is attached to the headline lumen figure, and if not, treat that absence as the review. Then read the IP rating carefully and notice whether the first digit is a number or an X. Finally, look for a throw figure or a named optic, since a lumen count with no beam description tells you how much light is produced and nothing about where it goes.
How much should you spend?
Bike lights span a wide range and the money buys runtime and sealing more than raw output. Budget buys a light that will make you visible and, in the 600 to 1000 lumen range, let you see on a dark lane, typically with a modest battery and a plastic body. Mid-range is where this comparison sits, buying 1200 to 1600 lumens on a 5000 mAh class cell with a published mode table and a real IP rating, which is enough for almost all riding. Premium buys metal construction, external battery compatibility, higher sustained output without throttling, and in the German market a genuine beam cutoff. Because the useful differences at the top are about heat and runtime rather than peak lumens, buy on runtime at maximum and stop.
Questions, answered
Should I run a light during the day?
On roads, yes, and it is one of the few genuinely evidence-backed safety habits in cycling. A daytime flash mode is designed for exactly this and draws very little power, which is why lights advertise runtimes in the hundreds of hours for those modes. Use a flashing mode in daylight and a steady mode after dark, since a flashing light at night makes your speed and distance hard for others to judge.
Why does my light get dimmer after a few minutes?
Thermal throttling. A high-output LED produces a lot of heat, and once the body reaches a limit the light steps down to protect itself. This is normal and it is why aluminium-bodied lights with cooling fins can hold high output longer than plastic ones. It also means a headline lumen figure measured at switch-on is not always what you get ten minutes into a climb at low speed with little airflow.
Can I leave a bike light on the bike in winter?
It depends entirely on the ingress rating, and this is where the missing dust digit matters. A light rated IP67 is sealed against dust and temporary immersion and will cope with salt spray and standing water. An IPX6 light has been tested against jets but makes no dust claim at all, and winter road grit is abrasive and pervasive. Bringing the light indoors also keeps the battery warmer, which meaningfully improves runtime in cold weather.
How many lumens do I need for unlit roads?
Around 600 to 800 lumens with a decently shaped beam is enough to ride confidently on unlit lanes at moderate speed. Above that you are buying margin for descending fast, for wet roads that reflect less light, and for the reassurance of having more available. The practical reason to buy a 1400 or 1600 lumen light is not to use that setting constantly, it is that running a light at half its maximum gives you far better runtime and less heat than running a smaller light flat out.
