Hammock straps look like the simple part of a hammock and are the part carrying all the load. The forces involved are higher than most people assume, because the angle of the hang multiplies your weight rather than simply dividing it between two ends. Add the shock of sitting down and a published capacity stops being a formality. Read that number first, then length, then width, and treat the loop count on the packaging as the least useful thing printed on it.

What actually matters

  • Published weight capacity - the load the maker says the strap will carry. Voluntary in this category, and the single most useful thing on a page when it appears.
  • Hang angle - how steeply the straps run from tree to hammock. A shallow, flat hang feels comfortable and increases tension in the suspension substantially; around 30 degrees from horizontal is the usual recommendation.
  • Strap length - total reach, typically 9 to 10 feet per side. Longer straps let you use trees that are further apart, at a small weight penalty.
  • Width at the tree - how much bark the strap bears against. Wider spreads the load, protects the tree, and is often mandated at campgrounds.
  • Attachment points - the sewn loops along a daisy chain that set your adjustment increments. Useful up to a point, then merely numerous.
  • Webbing material - polyfilament, nylon ripstop or a proprietary woven fibre. Names matter because they tell you about stretch, water absorption and drying time.
  • Stitching quality - where a daisy chain actually carries load. Triple stitching at tension points is a meaningful specification rather than a marketing line.

The specs, in plain English

Daisy chainA strap sewn into a row of loops so you can clip in at different points. It gives adjustment without knots, and each loop is a sewn joint that carries the whole load when you use it.
Working capacityThe load a maker says the product is designed to carry in use. It is not the breaking strength, which is higher and usually unpublished. Treat the working figure as the one to stay inside.
Hang angleThe angle the suspension makes with the horizontal. Steeper angles, around 30 degrees, reduce the force in the straps. A very flat hang looks appealing and can double the tension at each end.
Polyfilament webbingFlat woven strap material made from multiple filaments, valued for low stretch and abrasion resistance. It holds water, so it is slower to dry than thinner technical fibres.
Tree-friendly widthA strap wide enough to spread load without cutting into bark. One inch is the common minimum at managed sites, and some designs widen specifically at the tree end.
Shock loadThe momentary spike in force when you drop into a hammock rather than easing in. It is well above your static weight and is the load that finds a weak stitch.
Whoopie slingAn adjustable loop made from hollow braided rope, used as an alternative to a daisy chain. Very light and infinitely adjustable, at the cost of being less intuitive to set up.
Strap extenderA short additional length that joins to the main strap for wide-spaced trees. Cheaper and lighter than carrying a second full-length set.
DenierA measure of fibre thickness in a fabric, as in 1000D. Higher generally means more abrasion resistance and more weight, and it says nothing on its own about load rating.

Green flags vs red flags

Green flags

  • A weight capacity stated in pounds or kilograms on the product page.
  • A strap weight published alongside it, so you can judge the carry penalty.
  • Length and width both stated, in figures rather than adjectives.
  • The webbing material named rather than described.
  • A longer version or an extender offered in the same line, which shows the maker knows trees vary.

Red flags

  • No capacity anywhere in the listing.
  • No strap weight, on a product sold partly on being lightweight.
  • Loop count given headline treatment while load is not mentioned.
  • Material described only as strong or heavy duty.
  • Strength claimed by comparison, such as stronger than steel, with no figure attached.

How to read a listing without getting fooled

Scan for a number in pounds or kilograms before anything else, and if there is not one, note that as the most important fact about the listing rather than an omission to shrug at. Then find the length, because that is the specification that most often disappoints in the field, and compare it against how far apart trees actually are where you hang. Check the width, both for the tree's sake and because campgrounds increasingly specify a minimum. Look at whether the material is named, since polyfilament, nylon ripstop and a proprietary woven fibre behave differently in rain and over time. Read the loop count last: it is the number printed largest and the one that will change your experience least.

How much should you spend?

Budget straps are 1 inch webbing daisy chains, and they are widely used and usually fine, but this is the tier where published capacities disappear. The mid-range buys a stated load rating, a named webbing and thought-out geometry such as a tapering width, which is where most people should land. Premium is buying weight: proprietary woven fibres that cut the pair to a few ounces while keeping a published capacity, worth it if you carry the suspension and hard to justify if it lives in a car. Since the straps are the cheapest part of a hammock system and the part holding you up, this is a poor place to save the last few pounds.

Questions, answered

Can I use rope instead of straps?

Not on trees, and often not legally. Rope concentrates load into a narrow band that cuts bark and can girdle a tree, which is why many parks and campgrounds require wide webbing straps and prohibit rope suspension. Straps also spread the load more predictably. Rope has a place inside a suspension system, in adjustable components like whoopie slings, but not against the trunk.

How far apart should the trees be?

Usually 12 to 15 feet for a standard hammock, which is why straps run 9 to 10 feet and still run short. Closer trees give you a steeper, less comfortable hang; further apart and you run out of strap. Carrying an extender or a longer set turns a lot of unusable sites into usable ones.

Should the hammock hang tight or with a deep sag?

With a sag. A hammock pulled nearly level is both less comfortable, because it squeezes your shoulders, and harder on the hardware, because the flatter the suspension the higher the tension at each end. Around 30 degrees from horizontal is the usual target, which looks like more droop than beginners expect.

How should I store straps between trips?

Dry and out of sunlight. Ultraviolet light is what degrades webbing that never sees a heavy load, and putting damp straps away invites mildew that weakens the fibres and smells. Dry them fully, keep them in their stuff sack, and keep the sack somewhere dark rather than on a porch.
